Reusable dusting cloths with lemon oil

The amount of dust that gathers in a home is sometimes a mystery. Vacuuming regularly and changing the bedding every week helps, but what about furniture and hard surfaces? Dusting cloths — unlike feather dusters, which mostly move dust from one place to another — actually trap and hold it. You can buy disposable ones, but making reusable cloths is easy, healthier (no chemicals) and far better for the environment.

Lemon essential oil gives them a fresh scent, cleans surfaces with its antibacterial properties, polishes wooden furniture and gently lifts the greasy build-up that cooking leaves behind.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups distilled water
  • 25 drops lemon oil
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar

Method

  1. Prepare a few cloths, or cut old ones into quarters.
  2. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and add the cloths.
  3. Soak them until there are no dry patches left.
  4. Wring them out gently, roll each one up tightly and store in an airtight container.

If the fabric dries out before you use it, dampen it with a little water. To reuse, simply wash the cloths and soak them again.
