Homemade weed spray with essential oils

Weeds take the nutrients in the soil that you want your plants to use, and gradually push them out. Nobody wants a garden full of toxic chemicals and herbicides — but that doesn't mean you have to live with the weeds.

Most of the time in the garden we simply pull them out, because we don't want to risk spraying our prized plants with something that could kill them, even a fully natural mix. Weeds on the pavement and along fences, though, are stubborn. This homemade spray helps you manage those spaces naturally — but be careful: it works so well that it will kill almost anything, so don't spray on or near plants you want to keep.

You will need

  • A 500 ml glass spray bottle
  • 400 ml distilled white vinegar
  • 40 ml liquid castile soap (2 tablespoons)
  • 3 drops wintergreen essential oil
  • 3 drops clove essential oil
  • 3 drops cinnamon essential oil
  • 3 drops orange essential oil

Method

  1. Put the essential oils and the soap in the bottle and stir.
  2. Add the vinegar.
  3. Shake vigorously.

Careful: this will kill neighbouring plants too, so try not to spray anything you want to keep alive.
