Alpha-lipoic acid, also known as thioctic acid, was first discovered in the 1950s. It is an enzyme found in the mitochondrial region – the energy "powerhouse" of the human cell.

In the late 1980s, scientists discovered that the acid possesses powerful antioxidant properties. Additionally, it processes other antioxidants, especially vitamin C and vitamin E, increasing their potency.
